A work in progress: Hesson

A work in progress: Hesson
New Zealand Cricket has no timeline for Jesse Ryder's return, Black Caps coach Mike Hesson saying the priority is supporting the talented batsman's return to full health.

As expected, Ryder's name was missing from NZC's 20 contracted players for 2013-14 named in Auckland on Monday Neo skin lab.

The 28-year-old has made a steady recovery from serious head and lung injuries since being allegedly assaulted outside a bar on March 28. He was placed in an induced coma in intensive care for three days.

Hesson said he was keeping in touch with Ryder, although not on a regular basis.

"I'll be meeting with Jesse in the next week or so, see how he's progressing, but I hear he's going well," he said, adding there was no deadline for Ryder's return to the international arena.

"We're certainly not at that point yet. The key thing is Jesse getting his health right - that's always been the priority."

Hesson said competition was intense for contracts, with nine players dropped from last year's list.

Andrew Ellis, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Tarun Nethula, Rob Nicol, Kruger van Wyk and Jacob Oram have all missed out storage unit.

Evergreen spinner Daniel Vettori declared himself unavailable last week, opting instead to focus on recovering from surgery to his problematic achilles tendon.

Long-serving pace bowler Chris Martin retired last week.

Six new players were named - Corey Anderson, Tom Latham, Bruce Martin, Mitchell McClenaghan, Colin Munro and Hamish Rutherford.

Two players regained a NZC contract, Grant Elliott returning after last being on the list in the 2010-11 season, while opener Peter Fulton makes his first return since 2008-09.

A set criteria is used to rank players across all three forms of the game, with Test cricket receiving twice the weighting of ODIs and Twenty20 internationals.

The players with the highest aggregate scores are then offered contracts.

New Zealand have series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies and India, as well as the World Twenty20 in the coming year.

The contracted players are: Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Grant Elliott, Peter Fulton, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Bruce Martin, Mitchell McClenaghan, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson chenille embroidery patches.
